Men 101 THP Appeal Denied

The appeal of the Men 101 THP, submitted by Gualala Redwoods, was denied at the appeals hearing Feb. 6 at the BOF. The vote was 3 to 2. The hearing went all day, with many presentations by the agencies involved in reviewing the THP. GRI brought its own lawyer and scientist. The initial disapproval of 101 was based on a NMFS nonconcurrence, which said that this THP, proposing to operate entirely within the floodplain of the Gualala, would likely result in a take of Coho. NMFS was supported in this by WQ, DFG, and ultimately, by CDF and the BOF.  This hotly contested decision is a significant victory for NMFS, and for the future of Coho and of sustainable forestry on the North Coast.

RRRAUL and the Gualala Improvement Network (GRIN) made a PowerPoint demonstration of the desperate watershed conditions prevailing under GRI ownership. “Anyone can identify destructive forest practices. You don’t have to be a professional forester to recognize bad forestry any more than you need to be a doctor to recognize ill health. If logging looks bad, it is bad.” -- Gordon Robinson, The Forest and the Trees: a Guide to Excellent Forestry
